GUEST SPEAKER:

Basil Mugwena

Head of Campus Accommodation at Wits University

Basil always insists that it must be known that he hails from Limpopo province. Employed by the Limpopo Provincial Education Department as a CS Educator in October 1997, he worked for the government for over a year and left to pursue his other passions in literature. He completed a Diploma in literature with The Leisure Study Group in the year 2000 and enrolled for a Masters degree in Media Science the year there after.

Once he completed his studies, he joined the former Wits Technikon (UJ) Student Affairs in January 2002 and rose through the ranks from Res Manager position, Head of UJ residences, Head of Privately-Owned Student Accommodation unit and Director of Student Life and Governance in 2018.

Basil played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of the Accreditation Policy for Privately-Owned Student Accommodation while in the employment of the University of Johannesburg.

The Policy was developed in line with the Higher Education Act: Policy on minimum norms and standards for student housing at public universities. The depth he brought into the industry made him a national asset/ expert in South Africa. Basil presented the best practice model in the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (Acuho-I) in Atlanta (Georgia), Birmingham University (Alabama) 2016, Higher Education Facilities Management Conferences (Namibia 2018 and Botswana 2019) and in Acuho-I Southern African Chapter (University of Pretoria 2017). At the end of September 2019, he joined Wits University on the 1st of October 2019 as the Director of Campus Housing and Residence Life.

He has since developed and started with the implementation of the Policy for the Approval of Private Student Accommodation at Wits University.
